4.2. Application server

In the Standard Edition, the application server contains a servlet engine that is basically a Java program handling servlet and JSP requests. In the Advanced Edition the application server also contains an EJB container.

4.2.1. The application server hierarchy

An application server, EJB server, servlet engine, and its corresponding Web applications are organized in a hierarchy. The application server contains the EJB server and servlet engine, and the servlet engine in turn contains Web applications.
