Chapter 26. The Python Language

Python is a rising star in CGI scripting. Touted for its uncomplicated nature, readability, and robustness, it has grown to be one of the most widely used Web and system scripting languages. Python is interpreted and object oriented. Python has more features than Perl or Tcl and is easier to learn and use. The documentation and tutorials available to aid in the learning process are much clearer than those available for PHP. Python also edges out PHP in the elegant way it handles namespaces. Python has a wide variety of uses, including the following:

  • Command-line tools development

  • Web development

  • Component integration

  • Database access and manipulation

  • Distributed programming

  • Parsing

  • Image processing

  • Scientific programming
