Planning for web service performance testing

As with any types of testing, performance testing must also be planned properly in order to achieve the correct results. Web service performance test planning can be described in a set of steps, as follows:

  • Identify the expected performance requirements
  • Study the service contract
  • Analyze service integration scenarios
  • Identify message volume, size, and transmission rate

The expected performance requirements can be specific to your needs. For example, your SLA of a web service includes a phrase stating that the published web service must serve the consumer within 5 ms at peak hours, or the service should be available (up and running) 99.99 percent of the time.
