8.1. Security Levels

The meaning of the word security varies a lot in general usage. It is important to discuss the different shades of security to set the proper context. In this book, we use security as a resource protection strategy that encompasses several policies. These policies define the behavior of the security architecture at various levels. These policies are, in turn, various security levels. Figure 8.1 depicts the different levels of security that can be deployed together to secure various aspects of a service. As we move up in the security stack shown, the result is a more secured environment. Each level, addressing a different aspect of data protection, is discussed next.
