Let's start with Web searching, since you'll want to use some of these guidelines when you move on to the news search engines.

Start by employing the Principle of Onions: try a very specific search and then slowly get more general. In the case of news searches, that means searching for place names and people names (this works really well). Use proper nouns before you use regular nouns. Why? Because if you're looking for information on a fire in Evansville, Indiana, Evansville is Evansville (and newspaper stories often spell out a state name at least once, leaving you less vulnerable to the Principle of Nicknames.)
