Versions and Patches
You should use the latest non-beta version
of your operating system with all patches, because performance
improvements are always being found and security holes blocked. You
can see what version of the OS you are using when you boot up or by
using the uname -a
command on most versions of
Unix. You should be aware that patches often introduce their own
bugs, so check performance immediately after installing a patch. The
Solaris Internet Server Supplement
(SISS) patch for Solaris 2.5.1 gives about a 20% performance boost to
Internet services under Solaris 2.5.1, both on Sparc and Intel CPUs.
The SISS also gives you
WebNFS (a file system for the Web)
and the Java virtual machine for multi-CPU machines. SISS 1.0 is
incorporated into Solaris 2.6. Under Solaris, showrev
-p
shows you the patches installed.
