  • Use the best modem that matches your ISP’s modem.

  • If on an Ethernet LAN, buy a card with 16K buffers or bigger.

  • Use an ISP close in hops to your most-visited sites, like work.

  • Use your employer’s ISP if you will be accessing the employer’s web site frequently, or dial in directly to the office LAN.

  • Buy a real router rather than pressing an old workstation into service.

  • Dedicate an Internet connection to your server. Don’t use the connection for browsing, system management transmissions, or system administration traffic.
