Preparing for the Future

From the results of the second Yahoo! event, it was apparent that the caching proxy was a success. The next step would be to make our infrastructure stronger across the board. We now had nine months to prepare for the next holiday shopping season. We had already worked out an initial concept of our new architecture: it would be layered (the old way was very flat); requests would hit web servers, and they would use the cache or hit the single database server for data. The new system would be much more complex.
