Adobe Photoshop introduced read/write PNG support in Version 4, but due to poor support for the PNG compression engine, the resulting PNG file sizes couldn’t compete with their GIF counterparts, thus knocking PNGs temporarily out of the race. Compression support has since improved, and the later versions of Photoshop (CS2 is the latest as of this writing) are able to squeeze an 8-bit image smaller in PNG format than GIF at the same settings.
