Value of Certification

There are differing opinions on the value of obtaining information system and information system security certifications. A wide variety of certifications are applicable to IT systems in general and also to skills obtained by an individual.

Relative to IT systems, certification and accreditation perform an important role in ensuring that computer systems and networks are evaluated regularly on a timely basis, vulnerabilities identified, and mitigating actions performed to reduce risk to an acceptable level.

Some individuals and employers view personal certifications as necessary to prove technical or managerial competence while others see them as checklist items to be obtained, but not necessarily guaranteeing good job performance.

Also, because of the large number of certifications with different objectives and requirements, the most appropriate certification or certifications for an IT system or a particular individual are sometimes difficult to determine. However, in general, the appropriate certifications provide a higher probability of success in both the system and personal arenas.

When It Matters

IT system certification and accreditation are valuable and necessary to protect mission-critical computing resources and ensure that the protections required evolve with time in response to new threats.
