Part IV: Further Directions

We conclude the book with a discussion of less established trends in the use of proxies and CDNs. While many details of the mechanisms described earlier will undoubtedly change over time, we believe that the underlying concepts introduced so far will be valid for an extended period of time. On the other hand, the concepts introduced in this part are less proven and may still change.

We begin by discussing the use of forward proxies and surrogates for purposes other than improving performance. Having a highly flexible and powerful proxy in the network provides the opportunity to implement a variety of services. Chapter 17 describes several of these services.
