18.1. Pros and Cons of CDI

Following is a list of the main advantages of CDI.

Greater reach: A CDN can expand its reach to a larger client population by utilizing partner CDN servers and forward proxies deployed close to these clients. This is especially valuable in situations where the CDN is not allowed to deploy its own surrogate servers close to clients. For example, in many cases, an ISP providing Internet access over cable modems allows CDNs to deploy surrogates only in data centers, but not directly in the cable infrastructure. However, the ISP itself may have forward proxies within the cable infrastructure, and the ISP could make these forward proxies accessible to partner CDNs via CDI.
