17.8. Summary
In addition to improving performance of Web accesses, forward proxies and surrogates (collectively called edge servers in this chapter) can implement a rich set of value-added services. Edge servers are a convenient place to do so because they are a focal point for Web traffic in an ISP, a corporation, or a CDN. Functional services are more tangible than performance improvement and, therefore, are easier to market. They can also be a more compelling differentiator between competing ISPs or CDNs.
Examples of services that might be implemented on edge servers are
Content filtering to prevent users from viewing certain content on the Internet
Content transcoding to make content more suitable for a wide variety of devices
