17.8. Summary

In addition to improving performance of Web accesses, forward proxies and surrogates (collectively called edge servers in this chapter) can implement a rich set of value-added services. Edge servers are a convenient place to do so because they are a focal point for Web traffic in an ISP, a corporation, or a CDN. Functional services are more tangible than performance improvement and, therefore, are easier to market. They can also be a more compelling differentiator between competing ISPs or CDNs.

Examples of services that might be implemented on edge servers are

  • Content filtering to prevent users from viewing certain content on the Internet

  • Content transcoding to make content more suitable for a wide variety of devices
