17.5. Implementing New Services with an Edge Server API

We have seen that an edge server can provide a platform for implementing a variety of applications. In addition to the user-visible services described in this chapter, we have described numerous techniques throughout the book that involve modifications to proxy functionality. One way to implement these functionalities is to modify the source code of a publicly available edge server implementation. The problem is that this approach creates a modified version of the code, which must be maintained. Given the rate of changes in Web technologies, keeping that modified version current would require constant porting of the modifications to new releases of the base product.
