Whichever point on the request processing path implements request redirection must select the server for a given request. Server selection is based on performance metrics of individual servers. The main types of metrics are proximity metrics measuring the geographical or network distance between the client and a server, load metrics that measure the load of individual servers, and aggregate metrics that reflect the overall performance of client fetches from various servers.
