This chapter has discussed a variety of mechanisms for request distribution. These mechanisms can be broadly divided into those that are oblivious to requested objects (content-blind request distribution) and those that take this information into account (content-aware request distribution).

Content-blind request distribution can in principle be performed by the client DNS server, the client itself, network routers using anycast, a balancing switch in front of a server farm, or the Web site's DNS server.
