9.2. Issues in Cooperative Proxy Caching

Cooperative proxy caching gives rise to two fundamental issues.

  • How can a proxy find out which other proxies (if any) have a document it needs? We call this a location management problem of cooperative caching. Location management is discussed in Section 9.3.

  • How can a proxy decide whether to fetch an object from a peer proxy or from the origin server? In a global network, the origin server may be closer or better connected than the proxy that has the requested object. We refer to this problem as a proxy pruning problem. We consider the pruning problem in Section 9.4.
