7.5. Summary
This chapter examines the benefits one may expect from a forward proxy cache. We considered separately conventional HTTP traffic and the delivery of streaming media.
Overall, an HTTP proxy can deliver significant latency reductions. Data caching alone seems to promise only modest improvement in this respect, unless the connection to the Internet is extremely slow, congested, or has high delay. More benefits come from combining data caching with connection caching, optimizing TCP implementations for particular network characteristics of the client-proxy link, and reducing the round trip time of IP packets between the communicating parties.
