Chapter 7. Proxy Caching: Realistic Expectations

The amount of literature and information on proxy caching is staggering. With all the hype around proxy caching, it would be useful to step back and consider how much benefit a proxy cache offers realistically. In this chapter, we analyze this issue in detail. We should emphasize that this chapter considers proxies as they exist today and concentrates only on performance. We talk about efforts for increasing the utility (and hence the benefits) of proxies, and caching in general, later in Chapters 13 and 17.
