6.6. Rate of Object Modifications

Another Web characteristic on which the utility of caching and replication depends is the update rate of Web objects. Update rates are important because they affect mechanisms for ensuring that a cache does not serve obsolete content to clients (see Chapter 10).

Douglis et al. [1997a] report some results based on accesses from several hundred research lab workers.[5] While it is unclear how representative this data is of general Web usage, the results should still give a rough idea of the tendencies.
