Types of Maps

In web applications, maps can function:

• To help users find locations and navigate through space.

• As a background that lets users correlate data points and geography—for example, network developers might be interested in overlaying communication nodes on a local map. See “Overlay Information on Locations” below.

• As a base for a graph, as described in “Show How Data Are Distributed Geographically.”

• As the visual container for details—for example, demographic, geological, or marketing data—that are tied to a particular location. See “Provide Decision Support and Analysis.”
