I have developed a reputation as an unconventional educator because I resist the notion of grading rubrics and step-by-step instructions for assignments. Crazy as it sounds, most of my assignments are mini case studies: Here is a business question. Here are some messy data. Make sense out of them and write a report for management.

I argue that this is the kind of problem we face every day in our work lives. Data are messy, often unstructured text. Managers do not lay out instructions about what to do with data or how to solve the problem. That is the data scientist’s job.
