The goal of this chapter is to help you get started with the Facebook platform in conjunction with some third-party tools and products (such as Zembly and NetBeans) that you can leverage when you create Facebook applications.

First, we’ll discuss various aspects of Facebook, including its core components FBML, XFBML, FQL™, and FBJS™, and Facebook Connect™. We’ll show you now to register Facebook applications, and discuss several open source projects donated by Facebook. We’ll also look at some examples of Facebook integration with other tools and technologies.
