Vision machines, new media andresistance
This chapter examines various aspects of Paul Virilio's theory of vision. Virilio is a major contemporary theorist whose work has inspired scholars such as James Der Derian, John Armitage and Julian Reid. This chapter will seek to provide an introduction to Virilio's theory of war and the media before relating this theory to new media. Virilio is here viewed as a theorist of domination and oppression, seeking to explain the contours of power by reference to the effects of regimes of vision and distance on ways of seeing. Yet he is also a theorist of resistance, seeking to theorise the possibilities (however marginal) for overcoming this regime of vision. ...
