Email and WAP

Until recently, the only kind of data that could be transmitted to a device was in a format called Short Message Service (SMS). SMS limited users to text messages of 160 characters or fewer. Although this format grew in popularity and gained good momentum as various companies built value-added services based on SMS, eventually a number of industry players decided that the Web-browsing standard was more likely to gain wider acceptance and emerge as the leader.
