Understanding Servers and Gateways

WAP devices connect to servers to retrieve and send information in much the same way as Web browsers connect to HTTP servers. In fact, WAP devices can connect to both WAP and HTTP servers (a behavior designed to eliminate as many barriers to WAP adoption and acceptance as possible).

If you want to serve WAP content you can install a WAP server. This is a piece of software, much like an HTTP server (and indeed, the two can usually run on the same machine). As seen in Figure 1.1, the WAP device makes a request from the WAP server which returns the requested data to the device for processing.
