Databases are similar to a powerful electronic filing cabinet. At their most basic level, databases enable users to add, modify, or delete information.

However, databases provide much more functionality than simply manipulating data. A database can allow authorized users to view specific information. Databases can also back up data automatically and on any type of time interval desired.

Perhaps the most advantageous aspect of databases is that they enable data changes to apply throughout all the areas of the system. Consider the scenario that takes place when you go to the doctor.
