Using Image Maps to Generate Material Effects

Image maps can also be used to define how materials will appear on your objects. Using a standard black-and-white image, you can define how colors will be distributed as well as how effects such as highlights or reflections will be defined.

  1. Add a Sphere object to your new scene and open its Material Editor. Select the Color chip and open the Function Editor. In the Chapter 15 folder on the DVD you will find a number of black-and-white image files. Each of them can be used for various purposes, not the least of which being to define terrains—which you will do in the next section of this chapter. This is why they are titled terrain-X.jpg.
