In this section, we will focus on some example performance issues and how to utilize esxtop to analyze them.

Example 1 – poor CPU resources

In this scenario, a particular workload (tvm-centos02) is achieving poor general performance. The setup consists of the following elements:

  • One ESXi host
  • Two VMs: tvm-centos01 and tvm-centos02

To start the analysis, proceed with the following steps:

  1. Start esxtop.
  2. Press V to only see VM-related CPU metrics.
  3. Check the list for noticeable VMs. If required, press e to expand the metrics. Enter a particular VM's group ID.
  4. Check the vmx-vcpu processes per VM. Refer to the following screenshot for the esxtop output:
