As mentioned earlier, this book focuses on the mechanics of VRRP and discusses VRRP in the context of IPv4. However, there have been several debates at the IETF on whether VRRP is needed over IPv6. A draft has just been introduced to the VRRP working group on IPv6 and some discussion has been taken up. There has been some controversy about the need for VRRP in IPv6. The issue concerning the need for VRRP over IPv6 arises because IPv6 has a concept of “neighbor discovery and neighbor unreachability detection” that encompasses the function of ARP and router discovery of IPv4.
