Chapter 10. Precursors to VRRP

VRRP, as indicated in other chapters, is an open standard prepared by an IETF working group. But there are also proprietary vendor-specific protocols that address issues similar to those covered by VRRP. This chapter describes two such protocols:

  1. Cisco Systems' Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP)

  2. Digital Equipment Corporation's IP Standby Protocol (IPSTB)

This chapter aims to present the highlights of these protocols and articulate their similarities as well as dissimilarities to VRRP.
