This appendix explores an actual VRRP implementation and some analysis of public domain code, available for VRRP over Linux at http://w3.arobas.net/~jetienne/vrrpd/ written by Jerome Etienne. To gain a full understanding of a protocol, there is no substitute for the study of an actual implementation. We take advantage of Jerome Etienne's generosity in making his work available in the open source form. But this is by no means a complete implementation, and the current version 0.4 (discussed here) misses several pieces (such as IPsec authentication) and works only over Ethernet.
