VoFR AND VoATM: PARTNERS WITH OR COMPETITORS TO VoIP?
The VoFR and VoATM approaches do not define the details needed to develop a full telephony supported system. Certainly, ATM furnishes the tools for carrying voice traffic through an ATM network and provides the means to negotiate the required level of service for this traffic. But it does not define the important procedures for interworking with the telephone user, for mapping the telephone signals into packets, etc. The same situation holds true for Frame Relay, although Frame Relay is a more complete packet voice specification than is ATM.
