Chapter 12. Other Packet Voice Alternatives

VoIP is not the only way to transport voice traffic over non-telephony networks. Indeed, there are two alternatives discussed in this chapter that are efficient, fast, and can yield toll-quality signals at a reasonable cost. They are voice over Frame Relay (VoFR), and voice over ATM (VoATM).[1] A third alternative, voice over Ethernet, was explained in Chapter 9, as H.323 which runs on local area networks.

[1] This series includes three books on ATM. For more information on Frame Relay, I naturally recommend [BLAC98], Black, Uyless. Frame Relay Networks. New York: McGraw Hill Signature Edition, 1998.
