THE CONNECTION MODES

Before we examine the messages that are exchanged between the Call Agent and the Gateway, we need one more piece of information. Each connection is defined by the following modes: (a) send only, (b) receive only, (c) send/receive, (d) conference, (e) data, (f) inactive, (g) loopback, (h) continuity test, (i) network loop test, or (j) network continuity test. The mode of the connection determines how voice signals are handled. The MGCP sets forth the following rules for these modes, and I use [ARAN98a], with amplifying comments:
