Speech coders are the engines for the creation and processing of the VoIP packets. They, in turn, are driven by DSPs, discussed in Chapter 3.

The old DS0, TDM G.711 coder of 64 kbit/s will eventually be phased out of the industry and replaced with the low bit-rate coders.
