Chapter 4. Voice Coders
This chapter provides an overview of the prevalent coders/decoders (codecs) used in VoIP. They are also known as codecs, speech, coders, voice coders, or simply coders. There is a wealth of information on this subject, and it is not my intent to rehash these sources. Some recommendations for reading are [MINO98],[1] any of John Bellamy's books, and the BT Technology Journal. Several of BT's issues in the past two years have focused on voice coders, and the ITU-T specifications.
