But why use IP for telephony traffic? Why not use Appletalk, IBM's Systems Network Architecture (SNA), or some other protocol? IP is the chosen protocol for internet telephony because, as the mountain climber says, "It is there." IP is not a particularly attractive protocol for telephony, because it was designed to transport data traffic. However, its universal presence in PCs, servers, and workstations makes it a logical and convenient platform for the support of telephony traffic.
