ATTRIBUTES OF THE INTERNET
The Internet was developed to support the transfer of data traffic (packets) between computers and workstations with the use of adaptive routing features, see Table 1-2. Adaptive routing means the traffic may take different routes through the Internet depending on network conditions at a specific time, such as congestion, a failed link, etc. The possible result of adaptive routing is that the destination user may receive the packets out-of-order. An Internet protocol (the Transmission Control Protocol, TCP) at the receiver can be used to reorder the packets into the proper sequence.
