PLACEMENT OF ISDN AND SS7

It should be helpful during this introductory discussion to explain where these signaling technologies operate in relation to the customer premises equipment (CPE) and the network. Figure B-1 depicts the placement of ISDN and SS7.

The most common placement of ISDN and SS7 is to operate ISDN between the CPE (user) and the network node (such as a switch) and to run SS7 inside the network, as the trunking protocol between switches. While this placement is a common practice, it does not preclude running SS7 between the CPE and the network node.
