Hardware VTEP Gateway

VMware NSX 6.2 introduces support for bridging on compatible physical switch hardware, also known as hardware VTEP gateways. Hardware VTEP gateways are VXLAN-enabled devices that are capable of encapsulating and decapsulating VXLAN packets. Hardware VTEP gateway bridges a VXLAN logical switch to a physical port or VLAN segment on a hardware VTEP gateway physical switch. Some hardware VTEP gateway benefits are:

  • High bandwidth.
  • High port density.
  • Low latency.
  • Physical flexibility. Enables extending VXLAN to areas that cannot host a software gateway. VLANs can be kept local to a rack and do not need to be extended.
