When VMware first released ESXi 3.5, the Remote Command Line Interface (RCLI) was also introduced to provide a replacement mechanism for administrators accustomed to using the Service Console on ESX. Significant improvements have been made in the last two releases of this interface, and with the release of vSphere the RCLI was renamed to the vSphere Command Line Interface (vCLI).
