Chapter 9. Action and the Great Outdoors

PHOTOGRAPHY IS ROOTED in vision and the art of seeing. Experienced photographers don’t clock in and out. Their trained eyes see what escapes the rest of the world. The eyes are powerful. We are pulled in the direction of what we see and this causes us to see more. With time and experience, the pull becomes stronger and the rhythm gains momentum and repeats itself again and again.

For many photographers, this process develops an intrepid drive and passion for the world. It compels us to wake up at sunrise, hike to the top of mountains, kayak frigid waters, surf exotic waves, and notice the dewdrops on a flower. ...
