Chapter 17

Computer-Assisted Surgery

Abstract

Surgery refers to the act of cutting the tissue of a patient for the purpose of treating or diagnosis. The goal is to improve the patient’s condition, either by learning more about the disease, or by surgically remedying it. However, there is a significant risk of doing the opposite.

Computer-assisted surgery, or CAS, refers to the use of computer technology for the preoperative planning and for the intraoperative guidance of surgical interventions. By assisting surgeons during the planning and execution of surgical procedures, the goal of CAS is to improve the outcome. With the availability of medical imaging and computer technology, visualization plays a central role in these solutions.
