Design Goals

VB developers represent a very vocal, loyal, and large Microsoft customer base. These developers (of which we count ourselves) want to hold on to VB's ease of use and its hiding of complexities. At the same time, we desire the power and access that other language developers have. Microsoft had to walk this tightrope when redefining VB for .NET.

To meet these demands, VB clearly had to move from a language of features (or a technology) to an actual programming language. In this section, we present some of the principles that were adhered to when VB was extended for .NET. This should help put in perspective the sweeping changes that the language has undergone.
