How were you taught in your undergraduate studies in design? Conventional methods and techniques?
Yes, conventional. I didn’t use a computer until my Masters, and even then very little. I did life drawing, collage, Celtic illumination, calligraphy, printmaking (mostly etching), a bit of watercolor painting and sculpture.
What drew you to photography as opposed to drawing, painting, and so on?
I have long collected books by the greats such as Weston, Brandt, Minor White, and so on, and was also hugely influenced by Ritts and Weber in the 1980s (like everyone else). I wanted to make beautiful, simple, sculptural mono nudes to start with—life drawing plus reality.
