Net, 2012. Removing the background altogether puts the focus squarely on the figure and its gesture. This image is a combination of just three source photographs—the profile and arm belong to a model, the hand is my own, and the scanned muslin links them together.

A bright mood, dark foreboding, light of heart, a dark look … language shows how deeply entrenched are our ideas about tone. Relative brightness and darkness is one of the key mood-inducing qualities of an image.
