Chapter 42. Template and Stencil Reference

IN THIS CHAPTER

  • A guide to the office productivity templates

  • A guide to the information technology templates

  • A guide to the architecture and engineering templates

  • A guide to Visio Extras stencils

Visio comes with dozens of templates perfect for getting a jumpstart on diagrams for work or play. Visio Standard 2007 provides templates for common diagramming tasks, such as building block diagrams, documenting business processes, or creating charts and graphs. You can also create a few basic architecture, engineering, and information technology diagrams, such as office space layouts or basic network diagrams.

For the whole enchilada of Visio specialized diagrams, you want Visio Professional 2007. The Professional version includes most common building plan diagrams, including electrical, HVAC, and mechanical plans. For information technology, you can create diagrams to document databases, networks, software, and web sites using many of the popular modeling methodologies.

Visio automatically opens stencils associated with templates. However, any stencil is fair game if you want to add other shapes to a drawing. This chapter identifies the templates in each Visio category, the stencils these templates use, and the chapter of the book that describes how to use them. In addition, this chapter provides a list of the stencils available in the Visio Extras stencil category.
