Keyboard shortcuts increase your productivity and reduce fatigue. With keyboard shortcuts burned into your brain cells, your hands remain rooted to the keyboard, saving the time it takes to switch between keyboard and mouse or to move the pointer to choose a command. The time savings really add up if you use keyboard shortcuts for frequently used tasks, such as zooming in and out or saving files. Switching between keyboard shortcuts and using the mouse gives your fingers and muscles a break during long work sessions.

Finding the spare brain cells in which to store the inscrutable key combinations is another story. Fortunately, Microsoft programs share many keyboard shortcuts; for instance, those for using the Help window or moving around in windows and dialog boxes. This chapter explains how to use keyboard shortcuts and identifies some of the more useful keyboard shortcuts built into Visio.
