The participant-centered approach is based on a certain design concept. The focus is on what the participants are experiencing. Significant energy goes into devising what the participants will talk about; significant time is devoted in the meeting to having the participants be in an active, contributing role.

Although this approach is still relatively rare, this is not a brand-new design concept. In the last thirty years, we have seen a small but burgeoning movement of meeting methods that are based on what we would call participant-centered design. The success of these methods has proven that participant-centered design is valuable and transformative.
